this is mathias. he's the resident cat at the misnamed black cat hostel in asuncion. he looks cute, but like a lot of cats he can act like a little fucker. this unspoken truism was shared with a french dude who was also staying there. one night we were both tidying up, clearing away bottles and clearing things into the bin. he had some screwed up cigarette packets which he was aiming for, launching at and mostly missing the bin on the other side of the courtyard. it looked like fun, so i joined in and we both tried to reach our target with the fastest throw possible. mathias was stereotypically curious, so wandered out to see what we were both doing. we turned to each other, and with a telepathic nod started launching the packets at our feline enemy. while this may seem like a form of animal cruelty, i'd counter that claim by stating a) you didn't meet mathias and b) you weren't as drunk as we were.

this car was in my way when i was trying to get an alternate angle of the an der alster 1 building, so i decided to take a picture of the car itself, which had the building reflected in it. i ended up with what i think is a better image than a straight building shot, so everyone's a winner. well, i guess you could argue that the guy who owned this car is probably a bigger winner than me.

i realise that i've made mention of this before - but i've just recently rediscovered a song that perfectly fits into the happy/sad genre that i like so much. it's another grandaddy number, from which i stole the title for this photo. what i like about it is how the last verse strides the gap between fond reminiscing and melancholic yearning, all with an unexpected and interesting melody. you wrote me little letters and, you brought me lunch that time, at my work and that poem you left, on my windshield wrapped in plastic, to protect it from the rain.

on saturday i was tidying up my flat, which is a rare occurrence, and i opened all the windows in the lounge, which in this weather is also fairly unusual. i was switching from room to room, and when i returned to the lounge i noticed a load of black dots around the windows. i went to inspect further and found hundreds of these buggers. ok, it wasn't hundreds, it was probably about fifty, but 'tens of these buggers' doesn't sound as impressive. either way, there was a hell of a lot. i'm not sure if there is a nest, or if they were just having some kind of ladybird fiesta, but it took me hours to get rid of them. ok, it wasn't hours, it was more like thirty minutes, but that's still a lot longer than i usually spend shooing ladybirds out of my windows. i would have taken a better quality picture, but i was too tired from all the shooing to worry about getting the settings correct.
