On April 27th, we set out early in search of the legendary Shipton's Arch. (Eric Shipton was an English mountaineer who came across the arch in 1947. Locals had known about the arch for the longest time.) At one point, this arch was listed as the world's tallest natural arch in the Guinness Book of Records, but because Guinness was unable to find it, the listing was dropped. In recent years that the arch was "rediscovered" for foreign tourists. We wouldn't have known about this if we didn't run into an Australian couple at the ruins two days earlier. This in itself was an amazing feat, as XInjiang is not a widely-known travel destination, especially to people residing outside of China.
