Courtesy of Dr Xiaowei Zhuang, Howard Hughes Medical Institute Department - Comparison of conventional and STORM images of mitochondria in a mammalian cell. The mitochondrial outer membrane protein TOM20 was labelled. (left panel) Conventional image of the left part of the cell. (middle panel) 3D STORM image of the middle part of the cell. The z-dimension infomration is color-coded according to the color scale bar. (right panel)the xy cross-section of the STORM image of the right part of the cell.

Enhancement of 5E6120. Striated muscle. coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a longitudinal section through striated skeletal muscle. The striated banding- pattern of the muscle fibrils is seen. The fibrils run in parallel (from left to right) and between them runs sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) that transmits nerve impulses to the fibrils. Here, the SR contains many mitochondria. Within each fibril are contractile units called sarcomeres separated by lines. A sarcomere has protein filaments of myosin and actin that slide over each other, thereby causing the whole muscle to contract. Skeletal muscle is responsible for voluntary muscle movement in the body.
