CAN up close. The ammonium nitrate is coated with enough calcium carbonate to 1) neutralize the acidifying effect of the ammonium and 2) render the material non-explosive and therefore of no use in making bombs like that used in Oklahoma City, USA, in the 1990s.

What a find! Gypsum mined at Itigi, Tanzania - near the rail road line! So sulfur deficiencies may be easily solved! This close up shows what appear to be calcite crystals mixed in the chunk of gypsum. If so, the pH of the material would be alkaline and it should not be mixed directly with urea. Let's see....next.

I received some data for both crop seeds (analyzed by XRTF in Keith Shepard's lab at ICRAF) and soils (analyzed by standard methods at a commercial lab) sampled in the Sauri cluster. [Note: The S values for the seeds have been adjusted by a factor of 2.5 to bring the raw data into the proper range]. For beans, seed is 2 to 3 times as concentrated as for maize seed and this is expected because of the much higher protein and essential amino acid content of the bean seed. Also, soil sulfate sulfur

Another field with many K deficient maize plants! This one in a well-tended crop of a leading farmer who used urea fertilizer. This field, like 90% of the many maize and maize intercrop fields I saw, had very erratic and low plant spacing. In fact the plants were not really in rows.

Another missed opportunity to utilize the nutrients and liming power of ashes. This pile of white ashes is just dumped at the edge of a crop field next to the house. This is typical and shows a lack of understanding of the value of ashes when carried to and spread evenly on the more acid, nutrient depleted fields farther from the house. I am hoping and recommending that optimal use of ashes in this manner or as an input into compost making will be part of the MVP agricultural demonstrations and

Onion seedlings doing quite well but showing some deficiency of N and K. Onions, sold both as green onions and as dried bulbs, are an important crop for the farmers the Potou cluster. I was somewhat surprised to see that many shops in Louga stocked large bags of onions from Holland. The importation, I was told, was necessary because of the seasonal nature of the local production...but I am not sure that this is correct as dried mature onion can be stored.
